Before you hire a landscaper

Five checks before anyone starts work.

  1. Match the license
    Look for C-27 Landscaping on the CSLB record. How to check a license
  2. Check bond and workers' comp
    Profiles with a matched license show the contractor bond and whether the business carries workers' comp or has certified having no employees. A crew on an exemption is a question to ask.
  3. Get written estimates
    Ask two or three businesses for scope, materials, permit costs and a start date in writing, so the quotes compare like for like.
  4. Ask about permits
    Ask who pulls the permit, and confirm with your city or the county which jobs need one.
  5. Ask for local references
    A business that does good work nearby can point you to a recent job and a name to call.
