Unpleasant experience overall for our ADU build. Some of the subs did decent work. However, our project was behind schedule, hit with unexpected change orders, unclear communication, and the quality did not match our expectations

My wife and I hired them to build a 750 sq. ft. detached ADU. Sean was personable, patient, and genuinely helpful during the design and planning process. We had some initial permitting issues that he truly went above and beyond for and I have no doubt that he is a good person and wants to do right by people.
Unfortunately, once the project moved into construction, we encountered issue after issue.
Our underground rough in plumbing wasn’t done according to the plans and had to be re-done, cabinets were installed poorly, a toilet was installed 6 inches from the wall, mini-split placement disputes, subpar flooring installation, poor caulking work, and overall low-quality finishes required us to step in and advocate for ourselves countlessly. We were at times being asked to pay for change orders to resolve them, and only after significant pushback, were they finally resolved at no cost. Too often concerns were minimized or explained away before ultimately being fixed once we persisted.
The project passed inspection, stayed remarkably close to budget, and from an outsider looking in the finished ADU looks beautiful. But when I look at it, I don't feel pride or excitement. I mostly remember the stress, frustration, and feeling that I had to act as the quality control manager because no one else was consistently doing it. So, if you’re okay Project Managing a Project Manager, you don’t have a strict timeline, you are ok with poor communication, you don’t mind low quality sub-contractors and countless rework, then choose Merribuild.

Alyssa made the process very accommodating! She had the knowledge and understanding of what we wanted to accomplish. I would recommend Merribuild highly and use them in the future.

There were some issues along the way which I think could have been avoided or communicated better, but ultimately our addition was completed and looks good

We had a wonderful experience working with the MerriBuild team from start to finish. Despite unfortunate rain/weather and city inspection delays, the project moved along, and we are thrilled with the quality and final results.
We worked closely with Paul (owner) and Sean on all specs and design. Sean followed thru sourcing the lighting, appliances, custom doors and cabinetry to fit our taste and budget.
One of the advantages of working with MerriBuild is the online platform (BuilderTrend) that they rely on for budget, change orders, invoicing, and calendar/progress. This made communication clear, open and transparent. We recommend MerriBuild highly and hope to work on another project in the near future!

Sean was able to come the next day and not only fixed the broken item but improved on it. Highly recommend Sean. We will absolutely call Sean again.

Do not use these people, they promise less in both costs, time frame - show up at the last minute to do work and then try to ream you. Definitely do not sign any contracts with these people. Only care about money, not service.

My wife and I have had about 12 different contracts over 5-6 years with Merribuild for work in our house and yard, and we have always been very satisfied with their work and their costs.
They are honest, they have strong work ethics, they are meticulous and take great pride in their work, and they are very conscientious. They have come here to work on actual holidays without us asking them to do that, and without asking for extra pay for working on a holiday, which we found amazing.
Most recently, Sean took on a challenging task which few have ever tried, much less, successfully accomplished: To take down a damaged 35 foot high backyard windmill!
We most highly recommend Paul and Sean Merrick, and their company, Merribuild.

My husband and I contracted with Merribuild (previously Paul Merrick Construction and later Reliable Renovations) for a series of small jobs inside the house and around the patio. Paul’s team did excellent work on all of these jobs.
At various times over about six years, we have had two bathrooms completely renovated, a gazebo and pergola installed, new sliding glass patio doors, a heat/ac splitter unit installed, and other projects.
We really liked the way that they worked with us on prioritizing the many jobs we wanted, and that they respected our choices and never tried to sell us anything. I appreciated that they were agreeable to a contract that left the painting and detail work to me, which saved some money and thus allowed us to get more projects completed.
We also appreciated that Paul was very upfront about additional expenses when we wanted changes and additions to the original contracts. Merribuild is very honest and we completely trust them.
When our large tortoises escaped their nighttime enclosure in the garage and wreaked havoc, Paul and his team came quickly to our aid. We needed a heated outdoor shed because our tortoises do not hibernate in winter.
I was impressed that Paul did extensive research about how to create an appropriate environment that would keep the tortoises warm and dry, and would withstand the wear and tear that large tortoises would inevitably inflict on it. He even called the San Diego Zoo to ask what they use for their tortoises! I had never even thought of doing that.
After they were finished with the build, we insulated the interior, and put in heat lamps to augment the tortoise-proof floor heaters that Merribuild had installed. Our tortoises have been very comfortable in their warm, cozy shed during cold winter nights and rainy seasons.
If anyone needs a tortoise shed, these are your guys!
We appreciated that while working in the yard, the guys were always mindful of where the tortoises were, and were very conscientious about keeping the gates closed so the escape artists never had a chance to make a break for it. It’s important things like that, that build trust and confidence.
We will definitely be calling on Paul and his team again in the future! I would most highly recommend Paul Merrick, his son Sean, and their team, without any reservations whatsoever.
